Charlie and The Chocolate Factory: A Modern Parable🍫

My son (who I will refer to as Bear 🐻) was unwell last week, so we cuddled on the sofa and I introduced him to the most bad boy movie ever made, (besides Matilda, ofc 🤓) Charlie and The Chocolate Factory!!🍫

Rebirth isn’t loud all the time. Read on to learn how God speaks through everyday moments with our children.

Me 👩🏽: What did Charlie and his family eat every single day? 🍽

Bear🐻: Yucky cabbage soup 🍵🥬🤮

👩🏽: Yep, it may have been boring but it kept them fed… Does Charlie and his family seem happy? 🤔

🐻: Yeah cause they are all living together in a tiny broken house but everyone is getting along.

👩🏽: Ok, and were they excited to eat cabbage soup everyday? 🥳🥬

🐻: No cause cabbage soup is yucky and Grandad moaned about it, but they shared it with family. It only matters if you share it with the people you love
🥬+ 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦=❤️

👩🏽: What bad things happened to the children when they got to the factory? 🤔

🐻: Violet turned into a big fat blueberry 😂🫐 and Augustus gloop almost drowned in the chocolate river 🍫🐷

👩🏽: Ok, so what does that tell us? ❓️

🐻:  Too many sweets are bad for you! 👎

👩🏽: Ok, and what happened at the end? 🤔

🐻: Bad things happened to all the greedy children and Charlie and his family were rewarded by Willy Wonka for being kind, good people 😇🥹

Upon reflection of mine and Bear’s dialogue– I was reminded of God’s grace and love for his holy children. Rebuking those who refuse to turn away from sin, and providing for the meek and humble 😌🤍

Biblical anchor:

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’
Hebrews 13:5.

“The meek shall inherit the earth. — Matthew 5:5

Charlie was a reflection of these verses

The prideful gained the candy, but the humble inherited the whole factory. I’ll let you decide what that says about heaven 👀✨️

Human lens:

From a psychological viewpoint, the children in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory all appear to present with one of the four primary attachment styles.

John Bowlby’s attachment theory reinforces the idea that these traits are not character flaws– they are adaptive measures that  children learn, in order to seek safety, comfort and connection.

FYI, our attachment style is NOT our identity. It serves only as a learnt response to our earliest memories tied to our primary caregivers. Our nervous system learnt from a young age to take certain measures, in order to protect ourselves from feelings such as inadequacy and neglect.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3. When we allow God to be our consistent caregiver, he will never use our shortcomings againt us– instead he uses them for our glory.

In every lesson there is a blessing 🙌🏽 and sometimes God teaches us the best lessons in those quiet moments on the sofa– Cabbage soup n all 😉

Take a couple of minutes to reflect on which attachment style you relate to the most….

And then relax in the thought that God can and WILL rewrite your story if you allow him to be your guiding father 🤍
