One of my most pet peeve phrases is ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’
It is soo limiting and completely goes against what God tells us about ourselves.
It is also a complete slap in the face to trauma victims, as it brings double shame, because not only did they have to go through the trauma, but they are now having to carry a stigma that was not there’s to carry in the first place!
Our family may influence us. Fact. But they do not hold the key to our final destiny. God is the Alpha and the Omega. So only He has the final say!
The enemy wants to trick us into believing that our family tree determines our future, but that could not be further from the truth!
Let’s take it all the way back to the book of Genesis where Cain chose wickedness, but his brother Abel chose righteousness. Or Rahab who came from a pagan culture in Jericho, yet through faith and God’s grace, she became part of Jesus’s lineage!!!
And the church said AMEN 🙌🏽
From a psychological viewpoint– psychology certainly acknowledges the fact that trauma and learnt behaviours in our family unit play a huge part in shaping us. But it also tells us that the brain is extremely neuroplastic, and through awareness, healing, new experiences, and intentional life choices, individuals can break generational cycles and create different futures.
In other words, the apple may fall near the tree– but it doesn’t have to stay there.,
If this post resonates with you, I just want to let you know that not only did I roll far away from the tree, I did the painful groundwork and allowed myself to rot and disintegrate into the soil until I was just a seed. And there I was reformed, re-planted, rooted deeply in Christ, and transformed into a whole new tree.
Still growing new fruits of my labour daily.
All glory to God of course.
I pray this encourages someone today ❤️
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
